Face ID Module
The TrueDepth camera array — cryptographically paired to your iPhone
The Face ID module is the TrueDepth camera array housed in the iPhone notch or Dynamic Island, used on iPhones from the X onwards. It consists of an infrared camera, flood illuminator, and dot projector that together map your face in 3D. The module is cryptographically paired to the specific logic board at manufacture — physical damage to the module means permanent Face ID loss at third-party shops.
Why It Matters For Your Repair
Only Apple can cryptographically restore Face ID — third-party repair shops cannot pair a replacement module to your logic board. If the Face ID module is physically damaged in a drop or repair, Face ID is permanently lost on that device. The iPhone will still work normally, but Face ID cannot be restored. Protect the top of the phone in drops to avoid this.
