IP Rating
What your iPhone’s water resistance rating actually means
IP (Ingress Protection) Rating classifies an iPhone’s resistance to dust and water. IP68 — used on iPhone 11 and later — means the device can withstand immersion in fresh water up to 6 metres for 30 minutes under controlled lab conditions. This does not mean waterproof in pools, the sea, or showers. The seals degrade with age, drops, and any repair that opens the device.
Why It Matters For Your Repair
After any iPhone repair that opens the device — screen, battery, charging port — the original IP68 seal is broken. Third-party repair shops cannot restore Apple’s factory IP rating. If water resistance matters to you, be aware that any repair reduces real-world water protection, even if new adhesive is applied. Singapore’s humidity means even minor seal degradation can allow moisture ingress over time.
